Traverse City, MI is the largest city in the 21-county Northern Michigan region. It is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States, and the surrounding countryside also produces grapes and wine. In fact, the county has over 50 wineries! Traverse City is home to the Turtle Creek Casino and Hotel, owned and operated by the Grand Traverse band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. In the summer, you can catch a collegiate summer baseball game with The Traverse City Pit Spitters at Turtle Creek Stadium. Or enjoy beautiful golf courses at the Grand Traverse Resort and Traverse City Country Club. Traverse city has many microbreweries, brew pubs, taprooms, and award-winning restaurants like Red Ginger, The Cooks House, Amical, Stella's in The Commons, and a local favorite - Slabtown Burgers. For events, you’ll find the annual Cherry Festival in the first week of July, and the Traverse City Film Festival.

SIP & PAINT AT OUR WOOD SIGN WORKSHOPS
At Board & Brush in Traverse City, we marry the joy of wine and paint with the classic timelessness of wooden signs. Our instructor-led DIY wood sign workshops allow you to combine your creativity and willingness to learn new skills. We provide you with the instruction, materials and design for you to distress, sand, stain, paint, and customize your personalized piece of art!
HOW IT WORKS
1. REGISTER FOR A WORKSHOP
View our calendar above to find a date and time that works best for you and your friends and family (the more, the merrier!). You can also look for a workshop that features the type of project you’d like to create, like a PYP or specialty project. Then, you’ll browse our gallery of hundreds of designs to choose which one you’d like to create in your upcoming workshop!
2. ARRIVE EARLY!
Our workshops start on time, so you’ll want to arrive early to get settled! You can start thinking about the endless creative possibilities ahead, take photos with friends, and enjoy your favorite beverage (some studios are BYOB, while others sell alcohol, please check with your local studio about their policies).
3. GET YOUR DIY ON!
At your paint and sip workshop, you’ll turn raw wood into a finished project fit for your home! You’ll be guided by our expert instructors throughout each step in the workshop - sanding, distressing, staining, painting your stencil, and waxing! You choose all your colors in person at the workshop! Our workshops are typically about 3 hours long.
4. DISPLAY YOUR NEW DÉCOR
When you leave our workshops, you’ll leave with a wood project that you’ll be proud to display in your home! We mean it when we say that no experience is necessary - our instructors are there to help turn you into a DIY expert. Now that your beautiful farmhouse-inspired project is complete, you’ll take it home to find the perfect spot to display it!

Meet Board & Brush Traverse City Owner
Whitney Williams
Whitney Williams fell in love with Northern Michigan after moving to Traverse City from Texas. She is currently a stay-at-home mom to 3 boys, but previously spent four years in the United States Army and also worked at a local school. DIY and crafts have always been a passion of Whitney’s, from creating stained glass with her mother, to filling her own home with stenciled creations. She attended many Board & Brush workshops and dreamed of opening and operating her own location one day.
After relocating to Michigan, Whitney met and married a native of Traverse City, Josh Williams. He is a successful boat mechanic who works at his family-owned business, Premier Marine Services. They now have a “his, mine and ours” family with sons Dayton, Noah, and James Dean. Looking for ways to support her blended and growing family of active boys, Whitney decided Board & Brush was a perfect fit and now is a perfect time. She has very supportive parents, John and Kimberly Lawson, who will be going on this adventure with her!
