Vestavia Hills is a suburb located in the metropolitan Birmingham area, just about 10 miles south of the city. Birmingham is Alabama’s largest city, with about 1 million citizens in that metropolitan area. It is known as one of the south’s foodie destinations with the most recent James Beard nation’s best restaurant, Highlands Restaurant, located downtown. It is also known for its die-hard college football fans. While the city is located just about 45 minutes away from the University of Alabama, Birmingham has just about as many Auburn University football fans as residents. Without any professional sports to speak of in the state, college football is serious business here. Its central Southeastern location makes Birmingham a great place to live with so many southern travel destinations within a short driving distance - Nashville, New Orleans, Atlanta and the Gulf Coast beaches. The Birmingham area was the perfect place to start open the first Board & Brush Alabama location!
Board & Brush Vestavia Hills is a BYOB establishment.

Meet Board & Brush Vestavia Hills Owners
Suzanne Liles & Katherine Stephen
Suzanne has worked in the insurance industry for decades while raising her family. Now with her family grown, she is reaching retirement age but is looking to continue a fulfilling role in her life through Board & Brush. Interacting with people has always been one of the most enjoyable parts of her career and she feels that Board & Brush is the perfect opportunity. A math major in college, and a detail-oriented worker in her day-to-day job gives her the skills to hone-in on the nitty-gritty details of the business side of things. She also wants the focus of her retirement to be on family, so opening a family-run business with her daughter Katherine makes perfect sense.
Katherine’s 10-year career in public relations, with a focus on event planning and media relations, lends itself well to getting the word out about Board & Brush and hosting parties as well as promotional events for the business. Now a mom to two young daughters, she was looking to get back into the business world, but in a flexible role that would also allow her to spend time with family. The timing made perfect sense for the two of them to go into business together with a company like Board & Brush.
Suzanne and Katherine heard about Board & Brush after Katherine’s sister, brought back a project from a workshop in Oxford, Mississippi. They were blown away by the quality of the project, and the overall impression she made about the workshop experience. After a bit of research, the mom and daughter duo found that there wasn’t a location in Alabama! On a road trip that day, they began brainstorming, and decided Board & Brush sounded like the perfect fit for them, and for their hometown. Katherine is the youngest of Suzanne’s three daughters. Suzanne is most proud of her grandchildren Carter, Davis, Addison and Eloise. Katherine’s oldest, Addison, just entered 1st grade at one of Vestavia’s local elementary schools, and she and her husband, Brad, are Vestavia Hills residents, so opening the studio in their community was important to them. Katherine and Suzanne are both Auburn University fans (Katherine’s alma mater), and love attending football games in the fall. They also both enjoy traveling to new places, finding new restaurants to try, and of course, spending time with their families.
